Mommy is hilarious
Emily laughed at me tonight. I mean, *laughed*. I'm not sure why she found peekaboo (with her feet) so very entertaining, but she did. She laughed three times before she got bored of the game :) though I did keep trying to get more giggles out of her. There's something so intoxicating about that little laugh :)

First real giggles!
Emily's been a smiley baby since she was three weeks old... in fact over the past couple of days I've gone in to her room with her fussing and crying in her crib and when she sees me she's all grins :D So cute!
But, today she let out her first REAL giggles, and had Sean and I just dying. She loves to hear / watch her Dad sing, so today Sean was singing some dancey song that he only knows 10 words to, and suddenly she just burst out with a full blown "Hehehe!" :O I was shocked! And thrilled! haha
Then later, same thing, Sean was singing and dancing and she was all smiles, and he said "She just loves dance music I guess!" And I said, "No she just loves her Daddy's singing." To prove me wrong he started to sing "Oh Canada", expecting her not to enjoy it, but again she was all smiles and then suddenly "Hehehe!"
Awwwwww. I love it.

I think she laughed??
Tonight Emily was fussing and I was trying to rock her to sleep. I had walked around her room with her too many times to count and she was still just looking at me with eyes wide open, so I decided to change things up and try out some squats :) For some reason when I did the first one I whispered "squaaaat" on the way back up. By the third one she got a *huge* grin on her face and made this... sound. It sounded exactly like "hehe". I swear, it's like she laughed. She looked very amused by this whole thing! Of course then I had to do like 15 more (oh the burn) to try to get her to do it again. which she did not. Turns out squats are great for getting her to go to sleep! lol
In any event... is it possible that she laughed or was this just one of those little breathy sounds sleepy babies make when they are smiling at you and it just sounds like a laugh? We may never know... unless she does it again... in which case I will report back ;)

Happy Halloween!
I was surprised that Matthew actually got excited about his costume, agreed to put it on, wore the hat and ran around telling everyone he was a fireman! Last year he was SO NOT into it - the costume, the Trick-or-treating, the face paint... Just wasn't into it. And up until today he wasn't showing much interest this year either. But... we did pumpkins this morning and he LOVED that - smooshing his hands in the goo, painting his pumpkin, the works. Then after nap we got our costumes on and he was thrilled to dress up as a fireman :D Went to a party at our friends' place, he kept the costume on the entire time, and then when it was time for trick-or-treating he did SO great, walking up the street singing "Trick-or-treeeeeat, trick-or-treeeeaaaat!" We only went to about 10 houses but he had a blast and said "Thank you!" after every one. And when he got home he had so much fun putting candy in other kids' bags - more fun than getting his own candy, I think. He'd say "Trick or treat!" so each kid who came up the steps. All around I'd say it was a complete success. (Except when I did bedtime with Emily in his room, and Matthew threw a fit because he wanted 'Baby Sistah' to sleep in his bed with him. Oops!)
Here are a few pics of our day / night!
Ready to go to the party (with his "fireman juice"), and at the party with Daddy:

Emily's first real smiles!
Emily gave us her first real smiles on Monday. Since then I have been trying to reproduce whatever hilarious thing I was doing at the time to try to get another smile :) I've gotten a few half ones but no huge ones like I got on Monday. I must have really been on my game that day, haha.
I managed to snap a few pictures... it doesn't get any better than this!
(poor thing has a pretty bad case of baby acne too... boo! :( )

Matthew can spell!
For a while now anytime we've been out in the car or stroller, Matthew would see a stop sign and say "S-T-O-P... stop." Well he was just saying the letters he saw and since he knew it was a stop sign, he knew it said "stop".
When Nonna was here, in addition to teaching him that he lives on "Glebehome Bulvawd", she taught him that "p-e-e spells pee" (one of those grandmother things to do, haha). She'd ask him every now and then, "Matthew what does P-E-E spell?" and he'd say, "pee!". Okay, well when you say "p-e-e" it sounds like you're saying "pee" so no great stretch there.
Then this week I put up a Halloween decoration that said "BOO". He asked, "What does B-O-O spell?" and I told him "boo". We went on to tell him, "And m-o-o spells MOO. And p-o-o spells POO!" Haha.
So, anyway - now you can randomly ask him what S-T-O-P or B-O-O or P-E-E or M-O-O or P-O-O spell, and he can tell you the right word. The rest of the time when he sees a word he will recite the letters and say "What does that spell?" or "... spells..." and I'll tell him the word. Or he will make up a word, which can be really funny: "T-O-D-D-L-E-R... spells blehberr pthhhh."

Emily: 1 month old
Miss Emily is one month old today.
Already? Seriously? Did someone turn up the time dial a few notches? Who authorized this??
In any event, she is a real joy, is starting to sleep for longer stretches at night (hallelujiah!) and is exploring her voice which is just adorable. We took her to the doctor last week and she weighed in at 10 lbs! You grow girl!

Emily's birth story
Here is Emily's birth story...
I had been having mild contractions every hour or so for a couple of days, so I was doing a lot of walking and bouncing on the birth ball to get things going. Then a couple of contractions closer together (7 mins apart) Wednesday night, then my water broke at midnight. That was a trip (it didn't break on its own with Matthew). Mom had arrived the day before to stay with Matty so we decided to head to the hospital before things got hairy. At that point the contractions were still mild, though the one I had while walking into the hospital I had to breathe through.

Welcome Miss Emily!
After much anticipation and preparation, little miss Emily Grace has arrived!
She was born at 7:32 am on September 24th, weighing in at 8 lb 2 oz and 21.25" long. Bigger than her brother was, much to our surprise since we were told she was measuring small!
She's been such a great baby so far, though she still has her days and nights mixed up and thinks 10 pm - 3 am are Happy Hour at the Mama Corral.
Matthew is doing exceptionally well adapting to life as a family of four and has fallen into his role of big brother with enthusiasm. He really is great. He still calls Emily "Baby Sistah" a lot of the time but has taken to calling her Em-A-Lee or just Millie. Very cute.
I'll post the birth story in a bit. For now, a couple of pictures...

A typical ride-home convo with Matthew
This is a typical conversation with Matthew on the way home from Mimi's at the end of the day...
Me: "How was your day today?"
Matthew: "Are we going THIS way Mummy? Mummy are we going THIS way? A mini-loader! Look a mini-loader! A mini-loader Mummy!! S-T-O-P... spells STOP. Red light Mummy! I see a red light! Stop!! Are we stopping? Oh it's green... It's green now! We can go now! Go Mummy! *pause*"
Me: "I'm going buddy. So, what did you do-"
Matthew: "A BUS Mummy! Look - a bus... in front of us! A BUS MUMMY! Where are we going? Are we going home? Where are we going? WHERE ARE WE GOING? Are we going THIS way? I want to go THIS way Mummy!! NO THIS WAY!! Wahhhh I want to go this wayyyyy... Where are we going? *pause* "
Me: "We're going home-"
Matthew: "I had pizza today! And chicken! I ate lunch today with my friends. Owen, and Connor, and Marley... but not YOU Mummy! Where are we going? Are we going THIS way??"
etc. Mostly at the top of his lungs. Haha.

36 weeks - nest nest nest
I've been feeling so BLAH for the past couple of weeks and really stressing about all the things we have to do...
Finally last night I got a second wind. Sean did bath & bed with Matthew and I started to half-heartedly clean the kitchen. Well, once I got started, I just kept going, and going... for nearly 3 hours I scrubbed the stove, microwave, fridge, toaster oven, cupboard doors, etc. I even polished the stainless steel, including the sides of the dishwasher that you can't even see when it's closed. It was like I couldn't stop...! I just kept seeing things that needed to be wiped and cleaned. I knew I was being a bit neurotic when I was cleaning the utensil holder but man, it felt good. It's so sparkly and clean today that I feel inspired to do the rest of the house. The dining room / play area is done, living room is in okay shape... I just need to tackle the bedrooms and bathroom and do all the floors. Oh and the basement of course. And the nursery. And never ending laundry. If only I didn't have to be working this week and next!!
Anyway I hope this trend continues... it would be so nice to have a polished house to bring baby home to!
In other news....
We had our 36 week appointment yesterday and everything is right on track, I'm measuring 36 cms so right where I should be. HR and BP were great, pee looks good (I know you all wanted to know about that ;) ) and baby is active and head-down. Still no stretch marks to speak of but I know there's still time for those to appear! I've been getting lots of Braxton Hicks contractions... and thankfully the Sciatica is completely gone.
Oh and we got the baby's car seat this week too! Yay! One more thing off the list. Here's a couple of pics:

"My friend"
This is Matthew's cutest new thing, calling us his friends. For example, if he and Daddy are in the back yard, and the neighbour comes outside, he'll point to Sean and say "That's my friend, Daddy!". Or if he and I are playing, and Sean comes downstairs, Matthew says "Here's my friend, Mummy!"
So, so cute.
So, so cute.

32 week update & pic
I thought I was 32 weeks last week, haha. No, that would be THIS week. Oops!
OB appt went well, I am up an enormous amount of weight which I won't share here, but hey, I can lose it later right? ;) Blood pressure and HR are fine, baby is moving well and lo and behold, my fundal height now matches my # of weeks! So, I've caught up.
I asked the Dr about flying and she said it's totally fine, but gave me a letter to take with me that says I'm fine to travel, just in case the airline wants to be turds about it :) I also asked about the Sciatica and she gave me some ideas of things that might relieve the pain, but basically it's just one of those things. Yikes.
Anyway here's a pic of the belly at 32 weeks. As Emiril would say... "BAM!"

31 week update - adding insult to injury
I'm officially in the "thick" of the third trimester (pun intended). If you couldn't tell by the # of weeks, you'd certainly be able to tell by my ever-expanding girth, and my sudden lack of ankles. Just today they decided to swell up like balloons (the left much more so than the right, which I seem to remember happening last time), into full-fledged cankles. Isn't pregnancy glorious?
The first 31 weeks were so nice. *sigh* So, whoever sent my body the memo that it was time to go into full-on preggo mode, I curse you.
Being spared the lovely symptom of heartburn this time is of little comfort, now that I've got a new and much more debilitating one: sciatica. The injury part of this post. The lightening bolts of pain that shoot through your hip, back, and leg every time you stand up, sit down, take a step, attempt to roll over at night, or breathe. SO not fun.
And the insult part? A stretch mark. I know... most women get them. There's no way to prevent them. Blah blah. I didn't get a single ONE last time. Up until yesterday I thought I was spared this time too. I thought wrong. A lovely little red mark appeared out of nowhere on my belly... *pop*... like a weird little tattoo reminding me that I'm getting bigger around the midsection (and everywhere else). As though I needed a reminder. ;)
On the upside... My doctor didn't mention the results of my GD test which I took to mean I don't have it and can keep eating what I want. AND... I discovered my benefits plan covers massage therapy, so I promptly booked a pregnancy massage for the place around the corner. I go tomorrow. If you don't hear from me, I'm in a delirious massage-induced coma. Wake me when the baby's here :) Which reminds me... we have only 8 weeks til our EDD. Holy crap.

Birds and bees and baby sistahs
Matthew and I ran into a neighbour (Franka, the mom, Liam who's four and Breanna who's 2) while we were out for a walk before supper. Matthew's getting to be more chatty with people we run into, sometimes coming up with random things to tell them like "That's Mummy!" and "I have juice!".
In any event, after Liam introduced himself ("I'm Liam! I'm four!") and his sister, Matthew said "I Matthew!" and then to Liam's mom, "A baby in Mummy's tummy!" and pointed to my belly. Liam's mom said something like "Wow, that's great!" (of course she already knew this... haha). But then he nodded and said, "Yeah... baby sistah," with a big smile, looking quite proud of himself.
So cute.
That's when Liam piped up and asked, "Why do you have a baby in your tummy??" Hmm. I said "Uh well that's a great question buddy..." *stammer stammer* ... and then, feeling quite smart, I said "Well we have a baby coming so Matthew can have a baby sister, just like you!" At which point he looked at his mom, pulled a face, and said "I want to go to the park!". Phew. Birds-and-bees crisis averted. Preggo 1, four-year-old, 0. I think.

28 week update & belly pic!
This week we hit 28 weeks pregnant... which means - dun dun dun... the THIRD TRIMESTER. Craaaazy!
I had an OB appt today which went well - but they measured my fundal height again and first the student doc measured me at 4 weeks behind. When I said I was 28 weeks she was like "uh... I better measure again". On her second measure she 'found' 2 more cms. Yeah those measurements aren't subjective at all, haha. In any event the OB came in to talk to me and said she wasn't worried, that the ultrasound measurements came back a-okay and that the baby was just small. Apparently she's in the 34th %ile, so not in the 'worriable' range at all, but the doc does want to keep an eye on things just to make sure everything keeps progressing as it should.
It's so strange to me to think about a small baby, given how big Matthew is. Then again he was always right on for measurements (I think right around 50th %ile?) so you never know!
They didn't have the results of the GD test yet... Hopefully it's all fine. They said they'd call when they got it in (I assume they'll only call if it's pos.).
OH... and I start going every TWO WEEKS now. Woah. I can't believe I am THERE already!!!
Anyway here's a pic of the House of Baby G2! :)

Baby Sister's name
I was talking to Matthew yesterday about his baby sister and what her name should be. I figured I should get his input :) So I asked him, "What should the baby's name be?" and this is how it went:
Matthew: "Baby's name be?"
Me: "Yeah... what should we name your baby sister, do you think?"
Matthew: *thinks* "Mummy?"
Me: lol "Well, that's already my name... we need a new name for the baby."
Matthew: "New name for baby?"
Me: "Yeah... a new name. What do you think we should call her?"
Matthew: *thinks* "Daddy?"
Me: lol "K, that's a good idea... but that's already Daddy's name! We need a brand new name."
Matthew: "Matthew?"
Me: "Hmmmm. Yes... good choice. But... that's your name! That's what we picked for you! We need a new name, just for baby."
Matthew: *thinks... hard* "Um..." *thinking* *looks around* "Oh!... Pirate."
So... okay. Baby Pirate it is then.

Couple of recent videos
Just had to share these recent videos of Matthew. He was playing with his cars last night as we were cleaning the kitchen (okay, while Sean cleaned the kitchen... I was just standing around, haha). His new thing is to have his cars talk to each other, and he makes up random songs (almost always to the tune of "Frere Jacques").
I'm not sure why he's *yelling* here but I think it's so the cars can hear each other on the different levels. Hehehehe. Also please excuse the poor quality and sound :)

Matthew's Story
Matthew told me a story this morning, out of the blue while I was getting him dressed. This is how it went (word for word):
"Once upon a time*, there was a little boy named "Baba",
Who slept in the bed, and couldn't get up in the morning.
The End."
*(How does he even know 'Once upon a time'?? lol!)

24 week Dr visit & u/s
We saw the doctor last week for our regular checkup, and everything seemed great. She checked my fundal height (how big my belly is) and hummed and hawed a bit, and then gave me a requisition for an ultrasound to check the baby's growth, since I measured about 2 weeks behind. Besides that though everything seemed fine!
So we went today for the ultrasound and got another peek at the baby! She (yes, the tech confirmed that "the sex hasn't changed", haha, so it's still a girl!) was moving all around and kicked the ultrasound probe a couple of times. Little Miss Feisty :) But the tech said everything looked okay to her and she checked the fluid levels and cervix and all seemed well. She showed us the flow in and out of the umbilical cord and we watched and listened to the heartbeat. Very cool.
We also got a couple of pics. Yay! Here she is...
1. Baby is folded in half in this one, with arms and legs in front of her body:

Little Miss Feisty :) But the tech said everything looked okay to her and she checked the fluid levels and cervix and all seemed well. She showed us the flow in and out of the umbilical cord and we watched and listened to the heartbeat. Very cool.
We also got a couple of pics. Yay! Here she is...

What's UP with that?
Someone needs to explain something to me, because I really don't get it...
How is it that I can make a doctor's appointment for 2:40 pm, show up at 2:35 pm, and sit in the waiting room for over an hour, while loads of other patients can breeze in the door and go right in to see the doctor. Huh? Do they have some special pass that I wasn't aware of?
And then finally when everyone else has been seen, how is it that I'll go in and be seen for 5 minutes? A 5 minute appointment takes nearly an hour an a half out of my day. Um?
More importantly... how is it that I can be on time for an appointment, and wait around for an hour for a doc or whoever else to get good and ready to see me... Whereas if I show up for an appointment 10 minutes late, I'm marked as a 'no show' and my appointment is canceled?? Wait -- so I have to be on time... but then sit and wait for an hour to be seen? I'm confused.
What's UP with that? Seriously... I want to know. I don't get it.

24 week update!
24 weeks pregnant as of yesterday and still growing :) I still feel good, no complaints - I'm sleeping pretty well and no real aches and pains (yet, haha). We see our doctor tomorrow to see how much weight I've gained and if I need to lay off the cake and cookies. Eek! Baby G2 is constantly kicking and rolling in there, having a grand ole time on Mommy's bladder. Sean has felt a few big kicks too!
Here's the belly progression so far... so, not a huge change but I definitely feel bigger and my belly is starting to get in the way a bit. :)

Matthew is TWO!!
Hard to believe that our little boy is two years old already! Where has the time gone??
For his birthday we're going out for ice cream (after presents at home!), and then having a small party on the weekend with his cousins and little buddies from daycare. We can't wait!
Happy 2nd Birthday Matthew!!
Here's a quick list of the things our 'big kid' is doing these days:- He can run and kick a ball, can throw, and is learning to catch
- He can count to 17 (ish) - skipping 6 and 7 most of the time. He is also starting to count to ten in French.
- He knows his full name, as well as his mom and dad's names
- As of this morning, he can successfully walk down the stairs on his own, holding the railing
- He can get into the car and up into his car seat on his own
- He can drink through a straw, and is learning to drink from a cup (when we give it a try!)
- He's starting to put puzzles together (one ones that fit together, versus the 'block' style that have cutout shapes)
- His favourite saying these says (besides "No!") is, "Matthew do it!!" or, "I do it - by myself!"
- He can brush his teeth pretty well... the front ones, anyway. We think he's just starting to get his second set of molars now.
- He loves slides and goes up the stairs and down the slide at the park on his own. Whee!
- He starting to play WITH other kids, likes to trade toys, and watches what other kids (and adults!) are doing and tries to imitate them.
- He can sing a few songs now (Frere Jacques, ABCs, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Rolly Polly) and loves to burst into song whenever the mood strikes him.
- His favourite books right now are Where's Olivia (a lift & flap book), Sleepy Baby, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar -- although he loves all his books.
- By far his favourite toys are cars and trucks and anything else with wheels!

It's official: he's a big boy
Matthew is only approaching two, but I think we can officially classify him as a 'big boy'.
- he has successfully made the leap to a real bed (yeah!)
- he's also becoming so much more independent, learning to go down stairs holding onto just the railing (and not my hand).
- we hear "NO! Matthew do it!!" at least 6 times a day.
- The WHY's have started ("Mummy? I want juice! Please."... "Hmm, no juice right now, but I'll get you some more milk."... "WHY??"... "Because milk's good for you."... "WHY??"... "Because... uh... it just is.")
- He can go up the stairs and down the slide at the park totally on his own. Woop! And would be happy to do this 45,000 times a day.
- And, today, the doctor confirmed it - he's a big boy. He weighs 34 lbs and is 37" tall. 97th %ile for each (Doc: "Well, he's well proportioned!" lol)

Big Boy Bed!!
Matthew is getting closer and closer to becoming a full-fledged BIG BOY. We went out this weekend and got him a bed!
We asked him if he'd like to go shopping for a big boy bed, and rather than his usual response to everything ("Noooooo! No-- Nyes."), he jumped up and said "YEAHHH!"... so off we went!
When we saw the bed (that we had actually picked out online ahead of time ;) ) Matthew got so excited and wanted to try it out right there in the store. In the checkout line he kept asking "Where's big boy bed??" -- I had a hard time explaining that it was in those two boxes ;) He also picked out his own sheets and duvet cover - with a bit of help from Mom - and we got him a new 'big boy' pillow. All set!
The next day Matthew helped Daddy to put the bed together...
Then he had to try it out right away (in the hallway), and check to make sure his thumb still works in this big bed... yup! It does! Yippee! He actually said "I'm SOOOO excited!!" :D

While Matthew had a bath, Daddy finished setting up the bed in his room. When he saw it all set up he actually did a dance and said "YAYYY!" -- He really was SO excited, haha. Of course he hopped right in and he's been doing GREAT in it ever since. He slept all night in it the past two nights, and had a four hour nap in it yesterday.
So... another big leap toward becoming a big boy. It's bittersweet... but very exciting!

Matthew (and baby) funny from this morning
Lately we've made a habit of tacking "... and baby!" on to the end of the list of people that we refer to in our house. Matthew likes to point out who is doing what, ie, "Three eating supper! Mummy *points*, and Daddy *points*, and Mashew!" (yes he thinks his name rhymes with cashew, lol). I'll usually say, "...and baby!" and point to my belly - sometimes Matthew will tack it on himself if he thinks of it, but not usually.
Anyway this morning we were coming down the stairs and Matthew was talking about Daddy making breakfast and blah (he never stops talking, I swear), and started naming who would be eating breakfast: "Beckfish for Mashew! Mashew, and Daddy, and Mummy... and baby!" I was like "Yeah baby too!" and then he goes,
"Baby loooooves to eat" and nods his head as if to say "yep, s/he sure does."
hahahahaha.
When I asked what the baby eats, he said "Applesauce!", in a very duhhhh Mom kind of tone. Of *course* the baby eats applesauce. ;)

Update on Baby Bean
I know what you're thinking: this poor kid, totally getting the short end of the blog stick. It's true... #2 is hard-done by. I get it. But such is life.
Anyway, things are going amazingly well so far. We're nearly halfway already!! 19 weeks 2 days today. Unreal. The baby has been kicking and belting me on a regular basis... too early to feel it from the outside yet (sorry Sean) but believe me, I am feeling it :)
We went for our "big" ultrasound today. Amazing!! We were able to see so much, and even a 3D view like last time. Unfortunately they have a lame new policy of NOT TELLING the gender while you are there, we have to find out from our doctor next week.
Nooooo!!
She couldn't even give us a 'between the legs' picture to analyze in the meantime. Grrr!
Besides that everything is looking great (to me anyway!). And yes, I have been taking belly pictures, just not very many so far (and really not much to see yet). I plan to take one next week when we hit 20 weeks, and will post that along with the GENDER on Tuesday! (fingers crossed we will find out that day, I am dying here!)

A cute funny from tonight
Matthew had had a pretty long, fun-filled day today, and I had a rough day at work. By the time bedtime rolled around we were both pretty wiped. Somehow we got through the bath, teeth, diaper, PJs, etc without too much aggravation or injury ;)
There I was sortof trying to rush through books because I was tired and just wanted out of there. We were reading "Moo Baa La La La" which he hasn't pulled off the shelf in forever. We got to the end: "It's quiet now... what do YOU say?" Matthew's quiet, almost whispered answer?
"pleaaaase."
I guess he's heard me say "What do you say??" enough times! lol... I slowed down with the stories after that.

12 weeks and the word is out!
That's right... Matthew is getting a little brother or sister! Woo hoo!
The EDD is Sept. 22 (or 21, depending on who you talk to). We went for our first trimester screening yesterday and all is well, baby is growing as s/he should (no, we don't know the sex yet ;) ) and was just a rolling and flipping around in there! In fact we caught a flash of a thumb in the mouth... we have another thumb-sucker! So cute.
We've told Matthew the news and although he really doesn't understand (from what I gather), when we ask, "Matthew, where's the baby?" he will say "Mummy's tummy!" and point at my abdomen. Hee!
Anyway, here are a few pictures of the little dude/tte, 12 weeks 2 days:

A couple of new pics
You asked, I deliver :) Here are a few recent pictures of the boy...
Matthew on the phone. When I ask him who he's talking to, it's usually "Opa!" or "Nonna!" but sometimes it's Mummy or Daddy. He walks around the house with this (old, not working) phone to his ear, doing other things like pulling his wagon or drinking his milk at the same time. Hee!
Showing off his cute new outfit. It says "Bring on the Snow" - of course now I am sick of the snow but it's a cute shirt anyway.
Looking a lot like a big boy... He was all ready for day care so he grabbed his lunch bag and stood by the door waiting for us!
* I tried to upload some videos but I guess they are too gigantic to be hosted here so I'm putting them on Facebook for now. Sorry! :(
